Plane Spotting

Anchorage has lots of glaciers, mountains and wildlife to see. But ANC is the spot to see airplanes. As the world’s 4th-busiest cargo airport and one of the nation’s busiest airports overall, ANC is a terrific place to spot the big planes. We even get the occasional visit from the world’s largest aircraft, the Antonov An-225 Mriya.

At nearby Lake Hood, you can see the float planes glide in for water landings or taking off with a roar to venture into the wilderness. Lake Hood is also a great place to book a flightseeing tour of Denali or other Alaska beauty.

Take advantage of the pullouts along Postmark Drive, Northern Lights Boulevard, and Pt. Woronzof Road for the best views of aircraft arriving and departing. Another great location for viewing is along the fence at the end of South Airpark Place.

GARAGE UPDATE: The airport parking garage is operating at 50% reduced capacity until October 2023 as maintenance work is completed. Travelers are encouraged to allow extra time when arriving to utilize offsite parking if needed (learn more). Motorists looking for their vehicle moved due to the construction, or any other parking issue, can call Republic Parking at 907-677-1074.
